Jack Mattice attended the University Of Oregon Medical School, where he received his Ph.D. in 1967 in medical microbiology. After working for a few years in the manned Apollo lunar landing program, he joined the nation's first "commercial" clinical laboratory --- United Medical Laboratories (UML). Dr. Mattice took a position in market development at UML, and he helped to forge a worldwide network of customers, including clients in all 50 states, 47 foreign countries, the Peace Corps and U.S. military bases around the world. When he left, UML was processing more than 25,000 specimens a day and was the largest clinical laboratory in the world.

Mattice co-founded Lancet Medical Industries in 1970, building clinical labs in the Pacific Northwest, Chicago and in Washington, D.C. Lancet became one of the cornerstones of MetPath (Corning), later becoming Quest Diagnostics.

In 1974 Mattice began his current laboratory consulting company, with clients in both the commercial laboratory business and among hospitals and other healthcare companies. He has also owned and managed private clinical laboratories for as long as 17 years, owned medical supply businesses in several states, worked for Nichols Institute as a vice-president of regional operations, and provided lab consulting services for more than 200 hospital clients.
